PROTEA HOTEL THE PARK - WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY POLICY

 

Purpose
The safety of our STAFF is the constant concern of the company directors, management & the Health & Safety representatives.

Every precaution has been taken to provide a healthy & safe workplace. Common sense & personal interest in safety are still the greatest guarantees of your safety at work, on the road & at home. We take your safety seriously and any wilful or habitual violation of our safety rules will be cause for dismissal.

The co-operation of every employee is necessary to make the Park Hotel a safe place in which to work. Help yourself & others by reporting unsafe conditions or hazards immediately to your supervisor or a Health & Safety representative (see attached list).

If you are in a position to remove or neutralise a hazard or unsafe condition do so ensuring there is no risk to yourself or others. You must still report such an incident.

Give earnest consideration to the rules of safety presented to you in your handbook, displayed on notice boards, safety notices & signs and discussions with your supervisors. Constantly be aware of safety as you perform your tasks and be aware of the impact your actions might have on your safety and the safety of others.

Scope
This policy applies to all Employees (inc casuals & trainees) Management, supervisors & Directors. NO ONE is excluded.

Description

Legal requirements for Employees

1. To obey all safe working procedures.

2. To work in a safe manner

3. Not to tamper with or misuse any Health & Safety related equipment. This includes fire hoses.

4. To report unsafe acts and conditions to Management or Health & Safety representatives, so that corrective action may be taken

5. To take reasonable care for Health & Safety of him/herself and of other persons who may be affected by his/her actions or omissions.

6. If he/she is involved in an incident which may affect his/her health or which has caused an injury, to report such incident to his/her supervisor or Health & Safety representative.

7. Where provided, to ensure that protective equipment is always used.

Legal requirements for Employers

1. Maintenance of systems & equipment.

2. Provide such information, training, instructions & supervision to ensure all STAFF carry out their duties in a safe manner.

3. Ensure the safety & absence of risk to health of all employees

4. Establishing what hazards to Health & Safety are attached to any task which is performed and to take precautionary measures to eliminate them.

5. To provide safety clothing & equipment where needed

6. Not permitting an Employee to carry out any task unless safety measures are in place.

7. Ensure that the requirements of The Health & Safety Act are complied with by every employee.

8. Ensure that regular Health & safety audits take place

9. To hold quarterly (minimum) Health & Safety committee meetings.

Responsibilities of the Health & Safety representatives

1. To attend Health & Safety committee meetings as & when scheduled

2. Maintain a healthy & safe working environment

3. Take steps to eliminate health & safety risks

4. To carry out Health & Safety audits

5. Investigate Health & Safety issues & incidents

6. Make recommendations to Management where Health & Safety is concerned

7. Ensure that the company & employees comply with the Occupational Health & Safety
at Work Act.

8. To report any health & Safety risks immediately

Procedure
Accident reporting - Any injury at work, no matter how small, must be reported immediately to your supervisor, and receive first Aid treatment.

Safety Rules & GuidelinesTo ensure your safety, and that of your colleagues, please observe and obey the following rules & guidelines:-

- Observe & practice the safety procedures established for the job.

- In case of sickness or injury, no matter how slight, report at once to your supervisor. Under NO circumstances should an employee treat his own or someone else’s injuries unless he/she is a trained first aider. NO attempt should be made to remove foreign bodies such as sharp objects embedded in a person

- In case of injury resulting in possible fractures to legs, back or neck or any
accident resulting in unconsciousness, or a severe head injury, the patient is no to be moved until proper medical attention has been given by authorised personnel.

- Never Distract the attention of another employee whilst using machinery as you might cause him/her to be injured. If necessary wait until he/she has finished or call someone else

- FIRE DOORS & EXITS MUST ALWAYS BE KEPT CLEAR & FREE OF OBSTRUCTION – Bins, boxes, and other equipment should be stored correctly so as not to block escape routes.
Do NOT block access to fire extinguishers

- Do NOT tamper with any emergency equipment

- Keep your work area clean & tidy at all times

- Observe smoking regulations

- Running & horseplay are strictly forbidden as this usually leads to an accident

- Always use designated routes NEVER take hazardous short cuts

- Do NOT tamper with electrical switches & controls

- Report any unsafe acts or incidents to your supervisor or to your Health & Safety representative.

- Lift properly, use your legs, not your back. For heavy items get assistance and use a trolley

- NEVER throw objects

- Spillages should be cleaned up immediately, if floor are left wet this must be indicated by means of a warning sign.

Safety Checklist-

It is every employee’s responsibility to be on the look out for potential hazards. If you spot one of the following conditions or any other possible hazardous conditions report it to your supervisor or Health & Safety representative immediately.

Slippery or damaged floors
Tripping hazards such as electrical cords piping etc
Missing (or inoperative) entrance / exit signs and lighting
Poorly lit stairs & passages
Loose handrails or guardrails
Loose or broken windows
Dangerously stacked supplies or equipment
Open or broken windows
Unlocked doors or security gates
Electrical equipment left operating unattended
Open/broken doors on electrical panels & distribution boards
Water leaks
Blocked aisles & passageways
Inaccessible & broken emergency equipment
Blocked/locked emergency exits
Evidence of equipment overheating
Evidence of smoking in non smoking areas inc furniture store
Roof leaks
Safety devices not working properly
